When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time they can seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it, always. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948)
In addition to us bouncing electrons at each other in various electronic forums, I heartily recommend that every United States citizen reading these words who has a strong opinion or three about how the US deals with the events of Tuesday, September 11 contact your elected representatives and make your opinions known to them. In the days ahead, it will be too easy for freedoms to be sacrificed to either security or vengeance or both.
You can find contact information for the House of Representatives at

Do not wait to organize petitions or start ribbon-wearing campaigns or other solidarity efforts. Write, fax, or call them today (sadly, e-mail still gets short shrift from them) and tell them what is on your mind and what you want them to do. They are your employees, remember.
And wish them well, too.
Because just as the firefighters, police, and other rescuers are working diligently to save lives and rebuild New York and Washington, DC, your elected representatives are the people who will be called upon to see that liberty and freedom are maintained and strengthened in this most emotional of times.
Talk with them and give them your encouragement, your admonishments, your fears, and your hopes.
But talk with them.
